Apple (AAPL:NASDAQ) has been selling off ever since they released their new product line. Apple stock has always been one that exemplified the dynamic of “buy the rumor and sell the fact”. It used to be that it only pertained to their earnings announcements but now it has spilled over into all of their events. The most recent product introduction included three new iPhone models, an new version of the Apple Watch and Apple TV enhancements. Granted, there was nothing earth shattering about the new devices, they are just moving on to the next phase of their evolution.
The technology in the cell phone industry is slowing down. There is just not that much more in terms of “Wow” factors. Enhancements and evolution is the name of the game these days. There isn’t anything revolutionary about what’s coming up.That’s the downside. The upside is that a company that has the market share of Apple is going to be tough to catch up to.
The sell off in the stock was predictable. Everyone knew it was going to happen, so it did. It will sell off a bit more, most likely, and then return to growth mode. The late Steve Jobs once said that “ The public doesn’t know what they want until we tell them”. He was criticized for that remark but he was right. We don’t have the slightest idea what Apple has in store for the future. I can surmise that the Apple Watch will be leading the next mega growth phase of the company. With the emphasis on health and fitness, is there really any limit to what the watch can do? Think about it.
With the Apple TV, I wouldn’t be surprised if that becomes the conduit for all the new streaming services , such as the one that Disney (DIS:NYSE) announced plans for last month. I’m just speculating on that but it seems logical.
Two of the hottest areas of industry are wearables and streaming video. Apple would seem to be at the forefront of both of them. Apple is one of the most hyped and controversial stocks on the market, and rightfully so.
