Guys like Archie Bunker that go to work, pay their taxes, have a modest savings, and buy a new TV every five years or so, don’t exist anymore, at least not in this country. The 2020 version of Archie Bunker is swimming in credit card debt, can’t scrape together $400 for an emergency, and is going to be out of a job in the next few weeks, if not already.
A $1,200 stimulus check isn’t going to make much of a difference, nor would a payroll tax holiday. They need jobs. Last week, 281,000 Americans filed for the first week of unemployment benefits. Goldman Sachs predicts that the number will go to 2.25 million this week. Scary times.
